Our acoustic environment is with us every hour of every day, from the wind in the trees, to the rumble of the city, to the deafening sound of your favourite band, to the chatter of a market place or the clinical voices at life’s key moments.

Sounds confuse and annoy you, make you cry or simply cause you to pause and listen. Sound can be brazen in its ability to influence each human emotion as much as any other environmental factor. To be able to control, shape and study its acoustic impact is a lifelong privilege.

At its heart I, with colleagues, are making sense of one of our senses, and that exploration and understanding is what we desire daily to create as a service that clients should enjoy. They too should have an environment for which every hour works for them. Acoustics is as objective or subjective as we wish it to be, and finding that sweet spot for each of our clients is what makes us happy.

I have seen our Company go through some significant changes since joining as a summer student in 1994.   However, a constant value throughout has been the consultants ability to provide quality advice, in a timely manner, using language that makes the most complex of acoustic issues understandable to clients.

The current generation of consultants still serves clients that the first generation of Sharps Redmore consultants did over 30 years before.  The ability to engage with clients and build strong professional relationships, means our consultants are passionate to provide the very highest level of acoustic consultancy services.

My route into acoustic consultancy involved an environmental degree, followed by a post graduate diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.  With both my parents being involved within the acoustics profession, perhaps my career path was already chosen, even before I realised it.

I have had the privilege to work with some of the very best acoustic minds during my career, including many of those professionals that founded modern day acoustic consultancy in the 1980s.  The values of those early acoustic consultants have most definitely shaped my professional development and I am proud to now be passing on those values to the next generation of young acoustic consultants at Sharps Redmore.

The properties and behaviour of sound have always been something I’ve been fascinated with, even as a youngster, before I knew anything about the technical side of sound and how it behaves.

I’m privileged to be able to work in a field that gives the opportunity to always learn and develop knowledge. Sharps Redmore has given me the opportunity to pursue research into specialist acoustic areas and apply this knowledge on a wide spectrum of different projects.

I particularly enjoy passing on that knowledge to others and promoting acoustics as a subject of interest to those new to the field.

Acoustics is a hidden quality of the spaces we live, work, learn and play in – when the acoustics are good mostly we take them for granted, but it is a key factor in how we all feel in the built environment, whether we’re aware of it or not.

Our team at Sharps Redmore contribute to making the buildings and developments that will be used for many years into the future better, and in a small way improve the quality of those buildings we all use and the communities they sit in.

We are a tight-knit team here, with a strong commitment to being good representatives of the acoustics profession and also of the principles instilled in the organisation since our founders created it back in 1990, and we’re proud to continue to represent those values.

Did I see myself as Director of an acoustic consultancy when I was eighteen year old and starting on my professional career?  No way.  I didn’t even know what an acoustic consultant was, or what they did.

I initially started in local government as an Environmental Health Officer helping people resolve neighbourhood disputes, including noise complaints, and it was here that my interest in acoustics started.  I soon realised that there was much more to acoustics that just telling people to turn the music down, or stop the dog barking.  The science behind the noise started to interest me and I took the opportunity to join Sharps Redmore to learn more.

It was a step into the unknown and I soon realised how complex acoustics can be. I was in awe of some of my colleagues and what they knew.  Working with these people I started to understand more about the industry with the approach that acoustics should be understandable for all.  I continue to aim to produce reports which are of a high quality, but simple to read and understand.

Just the same as that young EHO telling people to turn their music down, I still want to prevent noise causing impacts on peoples living conditions.  I am now better able to do this as a Director of Sharps Redmore, and to give that same opportunity to those starting out their careers in Acoustics, as was given to myself all those years ago.
